About the Book

Bongai Carnage: Rise of Red to Green Jharkhand Andolan

This book presents a bold and alternative perspective on the Jharkhand Andolan, exploring its ideological roots, historical complexities, and overlooked narratives.

At its core, the book examines how communist socialism merged with the indigenous Hor-Mitan multicultural ethos of Mulbashi and Adivashi traditions, forming a unique ideological foundation that contributed to the eventual creation of the Jharkhand state. It highlights the significant roles played by key figures like Binod Bihari Mahto and A. K. Roy in shaping this inclusive framework.

The book also delves into critical historical questions, such as the exclusion of the Kurmi–Mahto community from the Scheduled Tribes list in 1950, which the author argues led to a significant delay in state formation and influenced territorial decisions like the merger of Purulia with West Bengal.

Adding further depth, the narrative explores intriguing possibilities, including whether Mazrul Hasan Khan established a revolutionary training centre inspired by Shantiniketan in the Gola–Chitarpur region, and the sacrifices of individuals like the Mahto brothers, who were martyred during the anti-Mahajan movement.

Combining historical research, socio-political analysis, and investigative inquiry, Bongai Carnage challenges established narratives and invites readers to rethink the origins and evolution of the Jharkhand movement.
